In light of recent data breaches reported by several U. S. retailers, we want our customers to know that keeping their confidential personal and financial information safe is a tradition we are committed to maintaining.

We take merchant data breaches very seriously.  We use a combination of safeguards to protect customer information, such as employee training, privacy policies, security standards, encryption, multi-factor authentication and fraud detection software.

We are constantly monitoring our customer accounts for fraud.  We contact our customers if we see  suspicious activity.

Customers have an important role, too.  There are a number of ways customers can assist to improve their security.

Monitor your Accounts

The most important thing you can do is monitor your accounts closely.  Check your accounts regularly for suspicious activity.  View your accounts online and check your statements.

Alert your local American Federal Banker immediately, if you see any suspicious activity on your account or if you suspect fraud.

You will not have to pay for any unauthorized transactions on your account as a result of a data breach.  Customers are reimbursed for fraudulent transactions when they notify American Federal in a timely manner.

Beware of Phishing Scams

Thieves often pose as bank representatives to steal information.  Be aware of fraudulent emails or phone calls requesting sensitive information.  American Federal will not request your account number, PIN or other confidential information by email, phone, text or fax.  American Federal asks you for confidential information to verify your identity when you initiate contact with us.

Never give your personal or financial information to anyone who calls you over the phone or through email or text, unless you have initiated the contact.  Rather than respond, contact companies directly, using legitimate sources such as contact phone numbers found on the company’s website, your statements and those listed on the back of your debit or credit card.

Don’t provide your Social Security number or account information to anyone who contacts you by phone or online.  Protect your PINs and passwords and do not share them with anyone.  Use a combination of upper case letters, lower case letters, symbols and numbers to create strong passwords and change them regularly.  Do not reveal sensitive or personal information on social networking sites.

Be aware of your surroundings and of other people who may be near you at an ATM or retail point of sale.  Use your hand or body to “shield” the ATM or point-of-sale keyboard as you enter your PIN and conduct your transaction.

Monitor your Credit Report

Order a free copy of your credit report every four months from one of three credit reporting agencies at annualcreditreport.com.

Getting a New Card

Our systems are monitoring accounts very closely.  Consumers are protected against losses.  If there are unauthorized transactions on your account, you will not be responsible.

We will continue to work with the card networks, law enforcement and industry associations to understand the impact of a breach and determine the best strategies to protect our customers.
