We Offer Trusted Financial Advice, Personal Banking Relationships

At American Federal Bank, we distinguish ourselves through the personal banking relationships we establish with our customers, who are full-time business owners and managers, farm operators, individuals and their families. Customers bank with us because of our reputation for offering comprehensive banking, insurance, and investment products and services and for the business and financial expertise our bankers provide. We customize our financial services for business, farms and individuals and our flexibility enables us to respond rapidly.

Customers come to know they can trust us and that we are a stable and secure financial institution. We are dedicated and committed to our customers, to their business and farm operations and to their communities. Folks who bank with us are part of the American Federal family and they understand that we care about their financial well being. Our customers recognize us for our integrity and our loyalty to them.

A Little History Goes a Long Way

American Federal’s roots go back to 1889 when a neighborhood building and loan association opened its doors on historic DeMers Avenue in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. Two years later, in January of 1891, the association was officially incorporated and obtained a state charter.

In December of 1934, the association was federally chartered, enabling it to lend in the state of North Dakota and to offer FDIC insurance on deposit accounts. Later, the savings bank would change its name to American Federal Bank. In 1991, American Federal became a privately held stock company. Following the devastating 1997 spring flood in East Grand Forks, American Federal reopened its corporate headquarters in the financial and government service district of downtown Fargo, North Dakota.

Regional Service Area, Local Decision Making

Today, American Federal Bank and its subsidiary American Federal Investments (AFI) serve thousands of customers throughout the Red River Valley of North Dakota and Minnesota and the Lakes Region of Northwestern Minnesota. American Federal Bankers and AFI Registered Representatives offer banking, investment and insurance products to customers at 13 full-service banking locations in 12 North Dakota and Minnesota communities. Customers are able to conduct transactions at any American Federal location regardless of which banking location opened their account.

Decisions at American Federal are made by our local bankers who sit across the desk from their customers. Our professional, consultative bankers offer options and recommend solutions. Every day, we work hard for our customers to help them make money and save money. We use leading-edge technology to help operate our business, but we never think of computers as replacements for our people. Our customers choose how they wish to bank with us—in person, by telephone, with a PC, at their business or farm—any where or any time it is convenient for them.

We work hard every day for our customers. We believe a personal banking relationship with a customer should be a long-term partnership.
